Using the outdoor spaces just outside our doors is a critical element in expanding your footprint and creating a niche area to relax and express ourselves. Regardless of the space, budget, or skill set, you can make it just right for you.

Steps #1 How the weather impacts the area.

How much sun?

Direct or indirect?

Wind: Understanding how the rain will typically blow is always helpful to use the space most practically.

Step #2 Measure your space.

It makes sense to put a table and chairs – always consider having enough room to pull the chairs out comfortably.

How many people are using the space on a day-to-day basis?

It is a great tip to ‘see’ how furniture will fit, use masking tape or butcher paper and easily rearrange as needed.

Step #3 Inventory what you have to work with before buying.

Poke around in your basement or garage for items you can use for tables, seating, and patio storage. Be creative in how you can use things differently. For example, a birdbath can have glass placed on top, which creates a side table.

Step #4 Choose your style & color palette with care.

As you look around at the items you’ve chosen to use outside, what color is repeated most often? To save money, using what you have on hand will dictate your palette.

If you are looking to purchase new patio furniture, consider your options carefully, like the style, shape, materials, and color. Create a Pinterest board and give multiple types some consideration before parting with your cash. Don’t forget Facebook marketplace will have neighbors selling something you might want before going full retail.

Some popular combinations: Earthy hues such as brown, taupe, golden yellow, dusty reds, and olive green. Other options are to go bold and pop with bright yellow, teal, and bright red. The most important is that you love the colors. Give some thought to your color sensitivity and do what makes you most comfortable.

Step #5 Push up your sleeves for some DIY

Scrub that furniture, refresh with spray paint, choose pots and plant some colorful plants that work with your color scheme.

Step #6 Don’t forget the outdoor lightingboth Task & Accent

Consider the specific purpose first. For example, you are lighting up a pathway or accenting a yard feature like a pond or old tree. Of course, candles and string lights add an ambiance too.

TIPS:

  1. While you are working on Zoom, consider an outside work table that has a flattering backdrop.
  2. Heat lamps are popular and will keep the chill away so you can extend your patio time
  3. Fire pits are a great crowd pleaser if you have space. Be mindful of local ordinances and deed restrictions.
  4. Retractable shades or umbrellas are a good investment if you tend to get too much sun on your patio.
